Agriculture

Climate change is causing a multitude of environmental problems around the globe and agriculture is particularly affected. Over half of India's agriculture is rain-fed which can present many problems as precipitation patterns change with the climate. Practices must be adapted to meet new challenges. Hence the Deshpande Foundation is working to promote sustainable agriculture in all of its Sandboxes. Since May 2016 the Nalgonda Sandbox has been supporting farmers in the area through a variety of initiatives.

We do this by

Implementing integrated pest management practices such as border and intercropping in cotton, red gram, green gram, okra, white jowar, sunflower and soybean cultivation, and distributing seeds to over 1,000 farmers

Promoting innovative water conservation techniques by the construction of farm ponds

Distributing organic pesticides to reduce damaging chemical runoff

Organizing village learning groups to promote best farming practices such as early sowing, deep ploughing, nutrient management and methods for achieving high fiber quality

Constructing rainwater harvesting ponds in farmers' own fields to overcome the effects of drought
